Kitting out chefs: what actually matters
Where the work happens
Heat, steam, oil and a hot wash after every shift. Kitchen clothing is laundered harder than anything else we supply, and it shows within months rather than years.
Who you are kitting out
Chefs, kitchen porters and front of house all need different things. Buying one kit for all three is the most common error in hospitality orders.
Which garments earn their place
Chef jackets and trousers for the line, aprons for everyone, skull caps where the kitchen requires head covering. Bib aprons for KPs, waist aprons for front of house.
Embroidery or print
Embroidery on chef jackets — it survives the wash cycle that would strip a print inside a season. Print is fine on aprons, which are replaced more often anyway.
Summer and winter
Not much, but summer service in a hot kitchen means people change more often. Four or five tops per person is realistic rather than generous.
Mistakes we see on chef orders
- Buying three chef jackets for a kitchen that washes daily at sixty degrees.
- Kitting out front of house in the same garment as the line. They are seen by customers and dressed differently for good reason.
- Choosing white for a kitchen doing heavy service. It is traditional and it is unforgiving.
Chef kit questions
Are the jackets breathable for hot kitchens?

Can front-of-house have matching aprons?

How do washes hold up on the embroidery?
Embroidery outlasts the garment — it's stitched, not printed, and survives industrial laundering without fading.
