Kitting out electricians: what actually matters

Where the work happens

Mostly other people's homes and small commercial units. Lofts, under floors, consumer units at head height — so knees, elbows and cuffs take the punishment rather than the garment as a whole. Rarely filthy, but rarely clean either.

Who you are kitting out

Usually one or two on the tools plus an apprentice. The apprentice wears out kit fastest and grows out of sizes, which is worth knowing before you order four of everything in medium.

Which garments earn their place

Polos are the backbone — a sparky is in somebody's kitchen explaining a quote, and a branded polo does more for the next job than a leaflet. Cargo or holster trousers for the pockets. A softshell rather than a bulky jacket, because most of the work is indoors and a heavy coat comes straight back off.

Embroidery or print

Embroidery on the polos and softshell. It reads as a firm rather than a bloke with a van, and homeowners notice the difference even if they could not tell you why.

Summer and winter

Little seasonal change indoors. What does change is new-build work in winter — an unheated shell in January needs a proper mid-layer, and a fleece is usually enough.
